Study Finds Evidence For A New Human Sense

Some humans may have an unconscious ability to sense Earth’s magnetic field, according to a provocative new study published today in the journal eNeuro. Years of exciting but often inconclusive experiments have led such research to fade in popularity. Now, a veteran in the field is hoping to revive interest with some of the strongest evidence yet that humans may have a magnetic sense buried deep within the brain.  It is well known many creatures, from frogs to lobsters, can sense Earth’s magnetic field, while others also rely on it for navigation (think: butterflies and sea turtles).  Caltech geoscientist Joseph Kirschvink and neuroscientist Shin Shimojo decided to revisit the issue, this time with a rather sophisticated study design. For the experiment, 34 …

UN: 25 Percent Of Premature Deaths Are Caused By Environmental Degradation

Environmental degradation is responsible for one in four premature deaths, the United Nations’ (UN) latest Global Environment Outlook (GEO) report reveals. That equates to approximately 9 million deaths in 2015 alone.  The report, unveiled at the UN Environment Assembly in Nairobi on Wednesday, has been six years in the making and has involved the work of 250 scientists from 70 countries to gauge how environmental factors affect more than 100 diseases. It found that 1.4 million people die annually simply due to lack of access to clean water. This is because dirty water often carries pathogens that can cause easily preventable diseases – diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, and typhoid, for example. Site Of “Blackened Stones” Could Push Back Human Occupation Of Australia By 55,000 Years

On Australia’s southern coast scientists have found a puzzle. Every explanation is so improbable it would be dismissed, were it not that the alternatives were just as strange. Among these unlikely options is the astonishing possibility humans reached Australia 55,000 years earlier than the oldest previously proposed dates. If true, it would not only overturn our thinking about the occupation of one continent, but the whole of human migration beyond Africa. Forty-five years ago Professor James Bowler of the University of Melbourne made a discovery that was to change Australian archaeology. At Lake Mungo, New South Wales, he found the oldest human remains in Australia, proving humans had been in Australia for 40,000 years. Since then tools 25,000 years older …

Any sign of May changing course?

MPs reject May’s EU withdrawal deal again There is already consternation in the Commons over her additional pledge that leaving without a deal remains the default option. The vote will, though, after pressure from colleagues, be a free vote where Tories can vote as they wish. That might not sound like a big deal, but for the government to let its own troops vote as they like on an issue that’s so important is extremely unusual. And if, as is likely, they rule out leaving with no deal for now, on Thursday she confirmed another vote for delaying Brexit. What isn’t clear from all of that is how the prime minister actually intends to dig herself out of this dreadful …
