Assault Accusation And Blackface Scandal Entangle Virginia’s Top 3 Elected Officials

With Gov. Ralph Northam’s career already hanging by a thread over a racist photo in his 1984 medical school yearbook, the day’s developments threatened to take down all three of Virginia’s top elected officials, all of them Democrats. Herring — who had previously called on Northam to resign and was planning to run for governor himself in 2021 — apologized for his “callous” behavior and said that the days ahead “will make it clear whether I can or should continue to serve.” AP Photo/Steve Helber In this Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018 file photo, Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring takes the oath of office during inaugural ceremonies at the Capitol in Richmond, Va. The Owner Of The USB Discovered In Seal Poop Has Been Found, And The Story Is Wild

The mystery of how a USB stick came to be found in a frozen sample of leopard seal poop in New Zealand has been solved, and it’s an interesting journey, to say the least. Last week, the world was simultaneously surprised and intrigued when the story of the USB popping up unexpectedly made headlines.   Researchers at New Zealand’s National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) run a leopard seal program to study the rare seals, and one of the best ways to do this is to look at their scat. It can tell a huge amount about what the seals eat, where they go, and their health. To get it, however, they need volunteers who collect the samples and …

Canadian man with unusual last name gets Assman license plate request denied

Dave Assman, who lives in the Canadian province Saskatchewan, said he’s had his request denied before and doubts whether it’ll ever be granted. Tyler McMurchy, a spokesman for the SGI, which reviews personalized license plate requests, said the committee must abide by a set of guidelines regardless if a word “is someone’s name and pronounced differently than the offensive version.”

Earths Magnetic Field Is Played Like A Drum By Solar Plasma

The Earth’s magnetic field is shaped by the complex motion of molten metals in the Earth’s core and by interactions with electric particles coming from the Sun. The boundaries of the field are constantly shifting and researchers have found evidence to suggest that the edge of the magnetosphere can vibrate like a drum. This idea was first proposed 45 years ago. When the outer boundary of the field, known as the magnetopause, is struck by solar plasma, ripples propagate across the surface. When these vibrations reach the poles they are reflected back. This creates an interference pattern known as a standing wave pattern, just like how a drum’s sound is produced. As reported in Nature Communications, this is the first …

Measles Cases Have Tripled In Europe

Last year, Europe saw 82,596 new cases of measles, three times as many as 2017, and a staggering 15 times more than the record low in 2016. 2018 saw the highest number of people contracting the disease in Europe in a decade. The disease can be fatal, with 72 children and adults dying last year because of it, according to the latest World Health Organization (WHO) report. Ninety-two percent of cases come from just 10 countries. The list, in order of most to least cases, is Ukraine, Serbia, Israel, France, Italy, Russia, Georgia, Greece, Albania, and Romania. Only six out of the 53 countries in the WHO Europe region didn’t have any new cases. Sixty-one percent of people that became infected required hospitalization. The WHO …

Police say they found an underground gang hideout and shooting range, and they’re not impressed

(CNN)Scratch “build an underground lair” from your list of ways to elude Southern California’s Fontana Police Department. “We are the champions at Hide n Seek and no manhole will help you,” it said. Interlocking rubber mats lined the ground in one area, with something resembling furniture pads or moving blankets fixed to walls, and a US flag hanging in one corner. Another area had a dirt ground and a wall lined with sandbags. Fontana police said they arrested an unspecified number of suspects; they did not release their names or say what charges they face. The department left the impression it didn’t admire the handiwork. “Friendly message to anyone who wants to engage in illegal activity and be a member …

Topshop’s Cozy Winter Clothes Are 30% Off Right Now Betches

So, it’s now February and it has been…hot? By that I mean, it’s been above 40 degrees. But let’s not get our hopes up for spring to make moves, even though the groundhog predicted it, because unless you were born yesterday, you know this nice weather won’t last. Unfortunately, it will be f*cking freezing again soon, and it’s even supposed to snow next week. Kill me now, please. On the bright side, having this news in advance allows us to prep for the weather the best way we can: scoping out the biggest deals to grab a cheap yet warm coat, durable boots, or fuzzy sweater to bundle up in for the office. Oh, you thought I would say something …

‘This fight is madness’: Macron-Salvini spat threatens to boil over

Paris (CNN)After months of simmering tensions between Rome and Paris, the battle for the soul of Europe just got a lot uglier. On Thursday, France recalled its ambassador to Rome for the first time since 1940, when fascist leader Benito Mussolini declared war. This time the French foreign ministry blamed a war of words — “the repeated accusations, baseless attacks and outlandish claims” of Italy’s populist government. The diplomatic row now threatens to spill over into the world of art. Leonardo da Vinci’s legacy — long a source of friction between Italy, where the renaissance master spent most of his life, and France, where he sought refuge and died — is now being fought over all the more viciously. The …

Turns out almost everyone loved that ‘controversial’ Gillette ad about toxic masculinity.

(Ad photo via Procter & Gamble Co.) The social media outrage index isn’t a very accurate way judging how everyday Americans feel about events in the news. Social media platforms, like Twitter and Facebook, are great places for the most closed-minded, opinionated, thin-skinned, and angriest among us to vent their frustrations. But, while those people are foaming at the mouth, most people are going about their day, worrying about making ends meet and thinking about how to care for their families and friends. They’re probably happier, too. If you were on Twitter in the weeks before the Super Bowl you probably would have thought conservatives everywhere were irate over the “controversial” Gillette “Best Men Can Be” advertisement. The nearly two-minute …
