The two groups that reach the peak of human endurance? Extreme athletes and pregnant women

(CNN)In pushing the boundaries of human endurance, extreme athletes and pregnant women are unmatched, a new study says. Longer pushes require lower intensities, but over a short period of time, the human body can successfully exert 4,000 calories on average before hitting the wall. That’s 2.5 times the basal metabolic rate, or amount of calories a body needs to operate while at rest. The average person won’t reach those limits in a typical workout (except maybe Crossfit, Pontzer noted), but pregnant women and extreme athletes cut it close. Weeklong races and nine-month pregnancies similarly push the body to its limits, often burning calories at a rate the body can’t keep up with. Original Article : HERE ; This post was …

Missouri may lose its last abortion clinic this week. That’s dark news for us all | Jill Filipovic

Anti-abortion activists know that you dont need to outlaw abortion outright if you can make getting a safe, legal one nearly impossible By the end of the week, One study on admitting privileges for physicians at abortion clinics found that they made no difference for patients receiving care. But they do make it harder for doctors to offer that care. Missouri also requires doctors to perform invasive and unnecessary pelvic exams before they can prescribe women abortion-inducing medication. A pelvic exam is not the standard of care for prescribing this medicine, and is simply another barrier erected to make abortion more difficult, expensive and, in this case, physically invasive. Consider this: The state of Missouri requires that women have their …

‘Im such a big fan of the menstrual cycle! the women asking whether its possible to have a better period

Exhausted with doctors not taking periods seriously, a new wave of authors is asking whether menstruation can ever be tolerable even enjoyable A tiny drop of blood on our bathroom floor was what gave me away. My mother took it as a sign that, at the age of 15, my period had arrived. After popping out to the shops, she came to my room with sanitary pads and a bunch of flowers; the pads came with a brief lesson on how to use them while the gerberas were left behind without explanation, some unspoken symbolism for my blossoming womanhood. The truth was, I had had my period for two years. It had arrived without fanfare when I was 13, but, …

Welcome to the Departure Lounge. Destination: death

An innovative project backed by the Wellcome Trust aims to help people come to terms with their mortality Images of sandy beaches, sun-kissed swimming pools and azure blue skies gleam from the window and walls of what appears to be a new travel agent opening in a London shopping centre. But browsers may be surprised by the destination, for it is a journey every one of us will one day take: death. Look more closely at the posters and it becomes clear that the words are all about passing away (half of British adults prefer to avoid the word death, apparently). The Departure Lounge, in Lewisham, south London, is the brainchild of the the Death Caf phenomenon, the growth of …

FDA allows sale of breast implant linked to cancer, strengthens warnings

(CNN)Despite an outcry from women to ban a particular type of breast implant associated with a rare cancer, the sale of those implants will be allowed in the United States, the Food and Drug Administration announced Thursday. BIA-ALCL is predominantly associated with a textured type of implant, rather than the smooth version. The illness is slow-growing and treatable when it’s detected early. At least 457 women in the United States have been diagnosed with the cancer, according to the FDA, and nine have died as a result. The cancer affects cells in the immune system and can be found around the breast implant. Acknowledging that international health agencies have been moving to ban the sale of textured implants, the FDA …

How quiet headphones and visual guides help autistic patients get better health care

Philadelphia (CNN)For most people, a visit to the doctor is fairly routine. But for individuals with autism, it can be a harrowing experience. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about one in 59 children is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. As a developmental pediatrician, Ross realized how challenging life can be for children on the spectrum and their families. For nearly 10 years, she’s made it her mission to help them participate in everyday activities — like going to a museum, sporting event or traveling by airplane. Ross was honored as a Top 10 CNN Hero in 2014 for her work. Now, she’s turned her attention to health care. Working with Jefferson Health, she’s begun to train …

Death sentence for abortion? The hypocrisy of US pro-lifers is plain to see | Jill Filipovic

The Texas state legislature is debating a provision that wouldnt just outlaw abortion, but legally qualify it as homicide. The repercussions are chilling Do pro-life advocates care about life or do they care about punishment? The latest abortion debate out of Texas gives a clear answer: the goal is to hurt women, not defend life. The Texas state legislature is debating a provision that wouldnt just outlaw abortion, but legally qualify it as homicide. For context of how extreme that is, even in the United States before Roe v Wade made abortion broadly legal, the procedure was outlawed in most states but was not considered murder abortion was its own crime. Texas in 2019 wants to be even more barbaric …

Science being ‘debunked:’ Why are some countries making a vaccine U-turn?

(CNN)More than a century before Facebook, anti-vaccination campaigners had another method for spreading their message — an eye-catching march through town with tiny children’s coffins emblazoned with the words: “Another victim of vaccination.” British parents in the 19th century didn’t take kindly to government-mandated smallpox vaccinations although the gruesome process — a series of deep cuts in the arms of the child — was a world away from today’s sterile practices. But the anti-vaxxers of the time were also joined by libertarians, who believed the compulsory vaccinations violated their personal freedoms. Today, that anti-government control sentiment “continues to be a thread in the anti-vaccine movement — particularly in this era of mistrust in government,” Professor Heidi Larson, director of the …

A 5th grader’s boredom while visiting her mom’s job led to $30,000 for the elderly in need

(CNN)Ruby Kate Chitsey asked the woman in the wheelchair why she was staring intently through the glass doors. Her answer broke the fifth-grader’s heart. “It was very sad. We have a lot of dogs and I could feel her pain,” Ruby Kate told CNN. Ruby knew it cost money to get a pet sitter to bring the dog to the resident more often. Many in her hometown of 12,000 don’t have extra to spare. That encounter last summer led the little girl to think: how many other residents couldn’t afford simple things that brought them joy. She decided to do something about it. She began by writing their wishes down Ruby Kate started a project and Facebook page called “Three …

Keep these recalled foods off your Super Bowl spread

(CNN)The Super Bowl is a national holiday even for those who don’t watch football. One big reason for that? The food. Federal officials are urging consumers to check the back of the freezer and dump any “Tyson White Meat Panko Chicken Nuggets,” produced on November 26, 2018 and have a case code “3308SDL03” on the label. There haven’t been any confirmed reports of illness or adverse reactions from eating the chicken nuggets. But federal health officials warn that the products may be in consumers’ freezers, and they should not eat them. Even more chicken nuggets Perdue Foods recalled 68,244 pounds of gluten-free chicken nuggets sold nationwide over fears of wood contamination, federal health officials say. The ready-to-eat chicken nuggets were …
